350 MW Additional Electricity Import

350 MW of additional electricity will now be imported from India to meet Nepal’s internal electricity demand during the winter season. With India’s approval to import electricity even through 132 kV transmission lines, it will now be possible to import 1004 MW of electricity during the winter season.

Nepal will now import 1004 MW of electricity, out of which 600 MW from the Dhalkebar – Muzaffarpur transmission line, 54 MW from Tanakpur, 300 MW from the Kataiya – Kushwa, Raxaul – Parwanipur and Gandak – Ramnagar transmission lines, and 50 MW from Mainhiya – Sampatiya will be imported.

Rajan Dhakal, Director of Electricity Trade Department at NEA informed, “In response to Nepal’s request for importing 450 MW of electricity through the 132 kV Kataiya (India) – Kushwa (Nepal), Raxaul – Parwanipur, and Gandak (Nepal) – Ramnagar (India) transmission lines, India allowed import of only 300 MW.” Nepal also requested to import 150 MW of electricity from the 132 kV Mainhiya (Nepal) – Sampatiya (New Nautanwa, India) transmission line, but India allowed only 50 MW. India has allowed electricity import for 20 hours until March 15.

Mr. Dhakal also said that India will not export electricity during the evening hours i.e., from 5 pm to 9 pm. After March 15, import will be allowed during the solar hour, i.e. from 6 am to 6 pm.
