After 88 Days, Upper Tamakoshi Resumes 120 MW Electricity Generation

Upper Tamakoshi Resume Production

Upper Tamakoshi Hydropower Project, the nation’s largest with a generating capacity of 456 MW has resumed partial electricity generation. The project resumed operation in Run-of-River (ROR) mode at 7:40 PM on Tuesday, December 24 (Poush 9) after 88 days of repair. By utilizing the current water flow available, 120 megawatts of electricity is generated.

The landslides on October 12 caused due to heavy rainfall on Ashwin 12 had damaged the control room, desander and underground canal (culvert) carrying water from dam to desander. Due to high water flow in the Tamakoshi river, electricity generation was halted from 7 PM on October 21.

Partial maintenance of the left desander was performed and electricity production is resumed. The remaining repairs to the desander are underway.

The Nepal Electricity Authority had started load shedding in the industrial sector due to Upper Tamakoshi shutdown, decreased production from other projects and India not exporting electricity during peak hours.
